About the pit firing process:

Creating color on ceramics using minerals and heat in a pit fire is a fascinating process that has been used for thousands of years. The bisqued clay pieces are coated in a special finish, placed into a carefully constructed fire with mineral pigments, such as iron oxide, copper oxide, and cobalt oxide, as well as organic matter, which reacts with the heat of the fire to create unique patterns and colors on the surface of the clay. As the fire burns, the organic matter releases gasses which interact with the clay, creating a range of vibrant colors that can include blacks, reds, pinks, oranges, and blues. This way of firing creates some wonderful patterns and textures. Each firing is different, and there’s no way to exactly replicate the effects, so this magical technique results in ceramic pieces that are both beautiful and completely unique.
